Secret Jobs Programme
Historically in the cleaning sector many jobs can go unadvertised due to high turnover of staff and limited opportunity to advertise due to reduced margins so remain unfilled. Those jobs can be part or full time and have been referred to as ‘Secret Jobs’.
Recognising this and the need for better trained, more knowledgeable staff we have developed an 8 week employability and vocational training programme for individuals with barriers to employment, particularly those with a history in offending. Funded by Capital City Partnerships, we will provide individuals with the tools, knowledge and experience to support their journey towards sustainable employment.
During the programme we will focus on integrating the guys into a team and building their confidence while putting them through industry recognised vocational training where upon completion individuals will be UKPAS certified and also possess their CEIH level 1 H&S. In addition to this, all participants will also be offered the opportunity to undertake ILA funded CSCS training should they wish and have access to regular training opportunities such as First Aid through our parent organisation, Apex Scotland.
Through our dedicated work experience element of the programme, individuals to gain meaningful hands on experience within the industry and have the opportunity to put into practice their vocational training. This will be supplemented with 1 day per week in our training room where our Personal development mentors will focus on developing employability skills, identifying and overcoming barriers and supporting a tailored personal development with a focus on entering sustainable employment. We also provide a 13 week aftercare provision where we will continue to support their journey, with weekly job club activity and 1-1 support.

Good News Story Case Study: Secret Jobs
Davie was referred to the Secret Jobs Programme in October of last year. Davie came to us through Job Centre Plus and The Action Group. When he commenced the programme he was short on confidence, with little or no motivation and had recently become a father. Further to this, Davie also has an offending background and mild learning difficulties, including quite severe dyslexia.
Previous to joining the programme, Davie had engaged with a number of third sector organisations and programmes, including The Princes Trust, Enable Scotland and The Action Group. Although he participated in valuable personal development opportunities, these never progressed into paid employment, something he had never experienced.
Motivated to “get out the house and do something” and to be more “responsible”, Davie engaged extremely positively during his time on the programme, impressing his peers and ACU staff with his work ethic and desire to improve his situation and has been granted a further 6 month extension to his contract.
Davie has been extremely proactive during this time, having accessed his ILA account to achieve his CSCS certification and has identified his need to improve his literacy skills in recent support and supervision reviews. ACU are supporting Davie to undertake adult literacy classes and in signposting him for assistance in matters related to tax credits and housing benefit.
Davie has set himself targets of achieving his CSCS card and commencing driving lessons within the next 6 months and in improving his literacy skills sufficiently to allow him to identify future opportunities.
